Emphasis

This is "Lipstick" by Bertram Bahner. I found this poster from the online store PopArtUK.

I picked this poster to show this week's "Emphasis". I liked this poster instantly, because it is lively and simply eye-catching. Even though the background photograph is monochrome, her skin and parts of the face stands out very beautifully. In addition to that, the pink colored lipstick bring into prominence as a focal point. The texture of tip of the lipstick is unique. How wavy and shiny it is, it makes it look like a 3Dimensional object. Without the pink wavy line, it creates large negative space on the right side and lose its compositional balance. There are three lines on her cheek and on the bottom add more colors to make this even more lively and leave fresh impression for the viewer.

  1. The use of color in this design is phenomenal. I really like that all of the colored sections of the image incorporate the magenta-red shade of the lipstick. The yellow and green that were also selected make great complimentary shades.

  2. This image is quite interesting. The stripes at the top right and lower left of the image balance out the face in the center even though they are asymmetrical. The stripes also add further emphasis on the red and yellow as these colors are repeated on the bottom, middle, and top of the image.

  3. This is a nice emphasis piece by isolation. It show us that by it's obvious breaking from the norm. It also isolates it's self by showing us a sharp contrast from the black and white photo to the bright loud colors that are used. The photo attracts our attention because it is centrally placed and it's a face. As humans we look for faces naturally first. The shocker is the lipstick being used in an unusual way. It delivers the message "Lipstick,"and gains our attention. I like this piece, it is nicely done.

  4. I agree with you on the poster – it is eye catching. For me, her eyes and mouth/lipstick first catch my attention, then her face, the colored lines, and then the text and lipstick line. I think this poster uses emphasis by isolation, placement, and through contrast. As you said, the contrast is in color of the black background & the face and the lipstick, text, and colored lines. Emphasis by isolation is used in that the lipstick is *different* from the face and b&w photo. Placement is important in that the lipstick line leads the viewer’s eye along the page to the text and the arrows. Also, I agree that the lipstick creates an interesting texture and a three-dimensional quality. The colored lines also lead the viewer’s eye toward the lipstick from the top and bottom. Great composition!

  5. Right away im drawn to two things the lipstick in her mouth and the three line on her face. Those two things has the most color overall in the image making me drawn to them. The woman in the image stay in the background not really popping out. This was a cool and amazing image to pick out for emphasis.

  6. Upon first glance I was definitely drawn to the lipstick. The color usage and the layout has really nice flow to it and it is selling exactly what it is meant to sell. Good picture.
