Color

One of my favorite artist immediately come to my mind when I think about colors. Her name is Mika Ninagawa. She is not only a talented photographer but makes movies, advertisements, and works many for fashion. Two of these posters are for the movie "SAKURAN". With the one on the left, green and orange are used, making a good contrast and leaving a warm but bright impression. I like she looks like she has the attitude from her smile and a angle of her body. The letters layout vertically along her face which gives more Japanese traditional image. With on the top right, this image has symmetrical balance by dark colored temples (they are actually "red light district") on both side. Whole image has sort of cool impression with blue and pink but gold fishes put more impact in this image and also they make blue color sky look like water.
These bottom two pictures are advertisement pieces. The one on the left advertises "BALI Island". The flowers on this side is more blur than far away. It creates the distance of depth, and vertical line creates of wider space as well. The contrast of these three colors are just beautiful. With the one on the right also has excellent color interaction and the black font image plays excellent in this piece.
Here is the link to her English website.

  1. It seems that Mika Ninagawa uses a lot of color in her images. The way she uses warm colors such as yellows, oranges, yellowish greens, orangish reds, really give me sense of energy and my eyes are attracted to these colors very fast. On first top images, Mike is wearing a red/orange dress which makes me focus on her more then anything else by the those bright colors she is wearing. In my opinion i believe that Mika involves a lot of red in her images because the color red in Japan represents life. A good way to represent life in Japan is through red which Mika really expresses that with her red/oranges colors. Just by looking at the first top images, i can feel that Mike is full of energy and that's she is enjoying life at the same time during a great warm summer. Just by the warm colors that she uses makes me forget about winter here for a moment.
On the other hand, the images on bottom tent to have colors that are not so bright like first images. The bottom images involve cool colors instead, and there is no red/orange involved like first images. The bottom images has cool colors such blue, green, and white color for the first image clouds. These bottom images seem to express calmness, relaxation, and peacefulness. Looking at the bottom images i can feel a huge change,..........its very interesting what colors express. Color definitely makes you feel either energize or relaxed. The importance of color defiantly plays a huge rule in our life's it express feeling and mood at all times.

  2. I really like the movie posters. The bright colors automatically draw a lot of attention and give the viewer an idea of what the movie would be like. The two bottom images, while less energetic, still manage to convey as much information to the viewer as the top two posters.

  3. Hi, Keiko
I will have a hard time concentrating on this until I tell you that I'm sorry to hear about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan on Friday and the continued after shocks. I hope that your family is safe and that you've heard from that already. My heart goes out to you and your family.

I was looking for a color scheme and find I'm on my own here. On the color wheel the colors don't seem to be opposites but they react the same way because of the intensity of the colors in the top 2 pictures. The bright intense colors is a good example of saturation and is only interrupted by the figures hand and face, forming the focal point and the calming effect of the picture. She is as visually strong as the colors in the background that it balances the picture. The second top picture is about value. The lightness or darkness of the picture is creating a focal point and is symmetrical. The contrast brings perspective and eye movement in the picture creating depth. This picture is about contrasts, so I wonder if what it is representing is about social contrasts too. Again, the strength of the images is making a point about something.Does the drama it is creating give the ad the impression it wants? Nice pictures.

  4. My thoughts go out to you and your family in this time of tragedy. It must be so difficult to see all of the devastating imagery and feel so helpless. With the magnitude of the quake and then the tsunami, it is amazing that anything is still standing.

The poster with the red-orange-green background is very vibrant and dramatic due to the complementary color scheme. While the picture beneath is calm and soothing because of the cool blues used for the ocean and sky - causing them to recede. The pink flowers stand out because warm colors advance. So the color scheme creates space and depth. Also, the perspective of the photo - far focus - creates depth.

  5. These are very colorful images. The artist did well to use complementary colors such as the red/green in the top left. In the other images the cool blue color really give them a nice relaxing calming feel.

  6. I love these bright colors. They compliment nicely with the cooler shades used in the backgrounds. I especially like the one with the flowers and the ocean. The pink and the blue are perfection.
