Problem Seeking Problem Solving

I found this image from organizedwisdom.com.
This grabbed my attention immediately by many design strategies, such as unity (by color, and vertical, horizontal lines), emphasis (by color and font size), balance (by position and layout). I think this is successful as a poster of "convergent thinking" conveying the message to anybody, young and old, instantly. I learned about the difference of a designer's convergent thinking(efficient) and artist's divergent thinking(inventive) from this weeks assignment.
The designer for this poster must have had clear definition of the problem and had focused on the final result.

  1. I do believe this is straight to the point and self defining. When I look at it I see the smoke stacks of a business pouring out it nasty waste products into the sky. Another thought is the twin towers images I also get. I wonder if that was the inspiration behind the the project. I do like the play of white space in the ad. I also think the typewriter typeface is great too.

  2. I really like this piece - simple and effective. Your analysis is excellent - the use of all of the design strategies involved. I would guess that the creative end of the composition was divergent - the intellectual association with smoke stacks, pollution, and smoking. I like the smudgy, old-fashioned, typewriter-style font. The use of color that connects the burning cigarette with the word "killing" does create unity and brings home the message.

  3. This image really does kill two birds with one stone. Addressing environmental and health issues that have to do with smoking. I was just thinking the other day (while on a walk) about how many cigarettes have been produced to this date and what happened to all the butts, how much pollution has this caused, and how many people have died (all in total).

  4. I also thought of the images of the Twin Towers when I saw this. If done intentionally, this connotation really drives the message of the ad home. The combination of white space and bright color is very striking.

  5. I like that there is a connection with pollution since we are trying to be more green. This is simple and I find myself wondering no more killing of what? People? The environment? Or is there something more the artist is trying to say? This is a very well done ad.

  6. NO MORE SMOKING,.... sounds like a good advice to smokers but its seems that the more we remind them the more they do it. The Word killing is in red text, which gives emphasis to the terrible results and consequences of smoking. I definitely get the message, and makes me understand of the air pollution that smoking causes around. This image tells a lot, and its very creative of how the text really has a strong message as well, big size with caps. I think that second hand smoking is also bad, and I definitely hate when someone is smoking next to me,....and i have to smell their stuff too,.... I have notice that cigarettes are really expensive and it seems that people now days prefer to skip lunch and smoke instead,.....which makes me think of how people are killing themselves little by little,...which makes me think of the image title "NO MORE KILLING".
